Tips for a spiritually rewarding fast:

1. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you with your prayer and fasting.

2. Set your length of fast, the type of fast, social and physical activities you will restrict and the amount of time you will devote to prayer and scripture each day.

3. Prepare your heart. Seek God's forgiveness for our weaknesses and areas which we need to improve. Expect God to give you the gifts of the Holy Spirit during this grace filled time.

4. Start slow so as to prepare yourself. Remember the first few days are the hardest....drink lots of water and keep your mind busy with prayer.

5. Set up a schedule. Add some time to walk and pray, "spend some time with God"

6. Unite your fast with the poor and hungry of the world. Solidarity in prayer and fasting is a rewarding experience.

7. Don't beat yourself up if you don't make it .... be faithful and try again.

Listening Turns the Soul to God....the sunflower was used as a visual reminder ....as it turns to the sun for growth....may we all turn to God as we journey in our Benedictine life.

Sr. Anne Shepard, Prioress of Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas puts a sunflower in a vase at the beginning of the Chapter. Each Prioress from all the communities put a sunflower in a vase that graced our oratory for the remainder of our time together.

We are having the Corpus Christi procession with one of the altars on the Monastery's front entrance.....it is a privilege to have Daily mass and celebrate the Eucharist My intentions are for all the many Sisters who do not have daily Eucharist because of circumstances beyond their control.....

A special thanks to the Navy Nurses.....

Many families will have an empty chair around the table once again.....they have lost a loved one....the empty chair is being placed by the Memorial in Altoona, PA as a rememberance of all those who will not be home.....

Try and imitate St. Stephen...the rocks may not kill but they do hurt...but Forgiveness is the key...

Wouldn't it be a wonderful world if we could all forgive and live in peace?

Can you forgive...even when it hurts?

Fig trees grow fruit 10 months out of 12. They have deep roots to get water and nourishment and are mature in 3 years. It is a great way to look at our lives....especially during lent....have we taken the time to prune, fertilize and water our lives so that we can bear fruit? Take the time to plant your roots, to bear fruit for eternal life...

A New Adventure

I am in a vocation ministry workshop at St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota. During one of the breakout sessions, I started this blog to share with you our wonderful. yet somewhat mysterious life. It is my hope that through this blog, you will appreciate the monastic way of life that I and many others live. Sit back as you look into "the monastic mirror".
